When the original LP record of Colonial Yesterdays was released in 1975 it was enthusiastically welcomed and reviewed throughout the country. The album is not only notable for being the first ever recording of the hugely popular Canterbury Crutchings Bush & Ceilidh Band, leaders of the Colonial Barn Dance revival, but also because it featured the first ever recording of "The Stable Lad" which has gone on to become one of the most enduring and popular love songs in the Kiwi folk songbag. The digital re-release of this ground breaking album features not only some new instrumental accompaniment, but also contains a further six songs and a waltz written in 1864, all of which were recorded during the same time frame as the original sessions.

The new tracks:- The Day The Pub Burned Down – Song For Captain Cook – The Waikato Waltz - Run For Your Life – By The Dry Cardrona - Soon May The Wellerman Come and Taumarunui all contribute strongly to the overall listening experience of Colonial Yesterdays and make the new CD a must have for anyone interested in New Zealand folk song and makes a valuable addition to the Phil Garland album collection with Kiwi-Pacific Records.

Colonial Yesterdays was originally hailed by the media as follows:-

"A valuable preservation of some of the colourful chapters in our country's history." Bob Moore – New Zealand Truth

"Colonial Yesterdays is a fine collection of traditional, adapted and recent songs from New Zealand's early days.......It is also a valuable collection of Kiwi folklore." Phil Calder – Canta Magazine

"New Zealanders owe much to the dedication of Phil Garland, who has devoted years to the collection and preservation of songs and ballads written and sung by the pioneers who first broke in this unfriendly land.....with the efforts of Garland and others like him, the country's musical heritage is in safe hands." Brian Cowley – Christchurch Press

"Colonial Yesterdays places on record some of the fine New Zealand songs that Phil Garland has worked so hard to collect and make available......He has a real talent for matching tunes with the excellent lyrics from our folk poets and I was delighted to find "The Stable Lad" on this album, one of the few love songs with a traditional feel to it. A great record and well worth having." Sharyn Harris – Heritage Magazine
